Science-Based ATOD Abuse Prevention

Course developed by Pamela Petersen-Baston, CAP, CAPP.

Since 1991 alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) use has been increasing among America's youth. To counter these trends we must strengthen prevention efforts at the Federal, State and local levels. Today, we are in a unique position to effectively intervene by applying the results of more than 20 years of prevention research. This course provides an overview of the knowledge gained from prevention research conducted by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) and answers questions about how these findings can be used to address local ATOD abuse problems.

The field of prevention has made significant progress. Science-based programs now have the potential to significantly reduce, or, at a minimum, deter the onset of substance use among youth. Programs and policies that focus on data-driven content have increased the potential to achieve prevention goals.
