Prevention Principles for Scientifically Defensible Prevention Strategies

Identifying what has been learned in prevention presents a challenge, in part, because different individuals and organizations bring different methodological criteria, standards and expectations. The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) has developed an integrated framework so prevention knowledge can be defined, assessed, and disseminated. This course is derived from the CSAP framework course and has five major objectives:

topics covered

  1. Identifies a conceptual model that provides a unifying and predictive framework for substance abuse prevention

    • The overall course synthesizes this information

  2. Discusses the principles that provide a foundation for understanding and for defining research findings as "scientifically defensible"

    • Chapter 2, Principles for Defining Scientifically Defensible Knowledge, provides a review of principles for defining scientifically defensible knowledge

  3. Identifies and applies specific principles and criteria to research studies, program evaluations, and scholarly efforts that enable CSAP to identify scientifically defensible findings, prevention principles, and prevention models

    • Chapter 3, The Data Matrix, presents the full CSAP Data Matrix, including risk/protective factors, intervention activity/strategy, principle/finding, and source citation.

  4. Presents scientifically defensible findings

    • Chapter 4, Science-based Principles, Practices and Models, describes the general principles derived from the data incorporated in the Data Matrix or presented in separate meta-analyses.

  5. Discusses how these findings can be used to ensure that the prevention strategies selected for implementation adhere to the guidance provided

    • Chapter 5, Guidance in Implementing and Adopting Models and Principles, presents guidance for optimal use of the information contained in the document for the purposes of: identifying scientifically defensible principles and program models; using the information included in the Data Matrix; reviewing grant proposals.
